2RS (double non-contact seals) & 2RD (double light contact seals)
One of the most common deep groove ball bearing constructions is supplied with two seals. With this construction, grease capacity sufficiently protects the balls within the outer and inner rings. A 2RS bearing has flexible metal-backed nitrile rubber seals (metallic/nonmetallic combinations exist) secured to the outer ring and makes light contact on the inner ring.
Advantages:
- seals protect balls from contaminants
- greased from the factory so lubrication is necessary
Disadvantages:
- bearing life is restricted to original grease because relubrication not possible
- Maintenance requires replacement of the bearing
- Higher Friction Losses
